The kilts are ready, the cabers are waiting and Brisbane’s young Celts are preparing for another day of tartan-fuelled fun as the second annual Junior Celtic Games returns this month.

Organised by the Celtic Council of Australia Queensland (CCAQ), the free community event heads back to Moorlands Park, Auchenflower, on Sunday, 31 May, promising a morning of energy, laughter and Celtic spirit beneath the watchful gaze of the Celtic Nations Monument.

After a successful debut, the Junior Celtic Games returns for its second year with a growing list of activities designed to introduce younger generations to traditional Celtic-inspired games and culture in a fun and family-friendly way.

Children and teenagers up to 16 years of age will have the chance to test their speed, strength and skills in events ranging from Junior Kilt and Tartan Races to the ever-popular Junior Caber Toss competition. There will also be a Gaelic football skills workshop, giving youngsters an opportunity to try one of Ireland’s most loved sports, along with a Celtic Tug of War, old-fashioned sack races, and the always colourful Best Celtic Dressed Boy and Girl competition.

The event timetable begins with check-in from 9.30am, before the first tartan-clad competitors dash away in the Junior Kilt and Tartan Race at 10am. The cabers start flying at 10.30am, followed by Gaelic football skills at 11am, tug of war at 11.30am, sack races at midday and the costume competition shortly after.

While inspired by Celtic traditions, organisers say the day is really about participation, community and creating memories for children and families.

The event is run entirely by volunteers, with the Celtic Council of Australia Queensland continuing its work promoting and celebrating the cultures of the Celtic nations within Queensland.

Families are encouraged to bring water bottles along with picnic rugs or chairs and settle in for the morning. With parking limited around Moorlands Park, organisers strongly recommend public transport, with Auchenflower railway station only a short walk away.

For a few hours on Sunday morning, expect Moorlands Park to transform into a scene where young warriors race in tartan, future sporting stars test their skills and a little Celtic magic comes to life.

The Junior Celtic Games takes place on Sunday, 31 May, from 9.30am to 1pm at Moorlands Park, Auchenflower and entry is completely free.
